Flexibility Defined

The new standard of flexibility

Power producers are facing a multitude of cost, efficiency, demand and fuel challenges that make operational flexibility a necessity. The performance features on GE’s FlexEfficiency* products answer the growing need to balance rapid demand and dispatch cycles, and support the penetration of more renewable energy sources.

  • Overview

At GE Energy, we are developing advanced power generation technologies that give customers more freedom to respond to vacillating power demands, increase plant revenue and operate within emissions guarantees. Whether the requirement is baseload capacity or part load to account for renewables, GE delivers innovative, proven solutions that bring operational flexibility to the forefront.

  • Start Capability

Fast starting and loading are key characteristics of GE’s FlexEfficiency* products, enabling the power generators to effectively operate in peaking and daily start-stop mid-range service. Plants based on GE’s FlexEfficiency products reduce fuel burn and emissions during start up. This enables plants to reach baseload in minutes, which helps increase plant revenue by rapidly responding to and capturing price spikes.

  • Start Reliability

For decades, GE has been committed to producing power generation technology that reduces start risk. GE draws from technology expertise and experience developed through its Aviation Business—a business that demands uncompromised reliability through heavy cyclic operation. Proven aviation and power generation design practices, coupled with next-generation materials, provide the foundation for industry-leading start reliability in FlexEfficiency products.

  • Turndown

With a shift to more cyclic operation, fewer plants are operating in baseload mode. The ability to be turned down while maintaining emissions enables power producers to consume less fuel during periods when electricity prices are below the marginal cost of generation.

  • Ramp Rate

Power producers strive to balance electrical supply and demand while maintaining power quality. The new FlexEfficiency* products offer unprecedented ramping rates and improved load-adjustment capabilities compared to older technologies, while continuing to achieve emissions guarantees. With the ability to quickly adapt to fluctuating demand, this exceptional flexibility significantly increases ancillary services revenue.
